Melodic guitar rock with clear echoes from the late psychedelic sixties and its mid-nineties revival. All songs on AITB are tight, well played with nice fuzz & wah-wah-guitars and the lead vocals and harmonies are well sung. The last track, Everyone Has A Spot In The Sunshine, is an epic sunrocking anthem with a whole lotta tambourine shaking and an organic, natural flow. (Psychemusic, Belgium)
Being just ’60s influenced, but of a more psychedelic flavour. An instant reference that comes to mind are The Grip Weeds, sharing an almost identical contemporary way of mixing up all- things-mid-to-end-60s, both rockin’ and poppin’. La poésie surréaliste de tels titres ne manque pas de suggérer qu’on a affaire à une bande d’allumés qui auraient fumé la moquette. Ce n’est pas complètement faux….Le groupe arrive à tirer les marrons du feu et à proposer une synthèse toute personnelle grâce aussi à une sorte de nonchalance dandy et d’ironie dans la voix du chanteur qui vous entraîne dans un univers onirique et surréaliste qui colle parfaitement à la musique. C’est plein de fraîcheur, de conviction et d’enthousiasme et légèrement décalé ce qui évite de se prendre au sérieux. Ce n’est pas très progressif mais on est preneur de ce genre de petite digression récréative par un groupe qui ne manque pas de talent et de savoir-faire. Très plaisant, d’autant que ça ne sonne ni trop vieillot, ni trop poussiéreux. (Harmonie Magazine, France)
Possiamo dire che gli Strange Flowers sono attualmente uno dei gruppi italiani più apprezzati sulla scena underground? Sicuramente sì. Un successo del loro suono, un connubio di paisley e popsike che li rende inconfondibili, un tratto compositivo caratteristico che è difficile non riscontrare anche nel loro Aeroplanes in The Backyard. Introdurre l’ascoltatore ai nuovi brani nati dalla prolifica mente di Michele Marinò era un compito che poteva essere affidato solamente alla delicata title track ed al suo bellissimo incipit; il vociare di bimbi che rincorrono felici i loro aeroplanini… Non sarebbero gli “Strange Flowers”, se rinunciassero totalmente a creare quelle atmosfere armoniose di jangle pop psichedelico nelle quali sono da sempre maestri; ed ecco allora Yellow Of Sun e la splendida My Girl Goes Shine… Un posto di riguardo lo si deve riservare a Flaming Mirrors e ad Everyone Has A Spot in The Sunshine, grande pezzo che tra l’altro ben si presta ad un’ipnotica interpretazione dal vivo. Un altro lavoro di ottima caratura, questa volta meno intriso di psichedelia e più sporcato da piacevoli riflessi blues-rock…una scrittura musicale più diretta che sfiora a più riprese il southern-rock, in cui le ruvide chitarre rimangono sempre in primo piano accompagnate egregiamente da un’instancabile sezione percussiva. A new record from the Strange Flowers is always welcome in my household…the new album is pop and rock at the same time. It’s an interesting mix with stylistic influences from the rock and pop traditions of the last 50 years. From r’n’r garage pop to acid rock, Alternative and even americana. On this album they somehow went farther off from psychedelia and closer to more accessible, radio-friendly retro rock. But don’t worry: Michele still writes excellent and catchy songs. Is a great album with top-notch playing, vocals and sound. I will order it right now. (Psychotropic Zone, Finland)
Ik keek dus vreemd op toen recentelijk opvolger Aeroplanes In The Backyard verscheen. Zijn die vage, Italiaanse hippies ineens wakker geworden en productief geworden? Veel gekker moet het natuurlijk niet worden. De nieuwe plaat heeft overigens een veel lager hippiegehalte en een veel hoger garagerockgehalte. Geen groot hippie-alarm derhalve. Lees rustig verder. Aeroplanes In The Backyard is een aangename plaat geworden, maar met alleen aangename muziek kom je er niet. Het grote manco van de plaat is het chronische gebrek om helemaal los te gaan. Leken de mannen vorig jaar vooral LSD uit de snoepdoos genomen te hebben, dit jaar zijn ze aan de tranquilizers gegaan en dat breekt de plaat gaandeweg op. Naast de tranquilizers liggen hopelijk de amfetamines zodat we volgend jaar een knaller van een garagerockplaat mogen verwachten, want The Strange Flowers moet in staat worden geacht die scheve toren uit hun woonplaats definitief te laten omvallen. Nuova strepitosa emissione per Teen Sound che stavolta si accaparra il fiore più prezioso nel giardino profumato della psichedelia italiana. Gli Strange Flowers tornano alla carica con un album pop psichedelico che farà la felicità di una frangia di audience vicina ai suoni contemporanei di Cosmic Rough Riders, Oranger, Brian Jonestown Massacre e sazierà al contempo le orecchie più avvezze al garage rock e alla “classica” barettiana. Tutto il disco ha la prerogativa di scorrere leggero su melodie di diversa foggia, dondolando tra quasi filastrocche (“Yellow Of Sun”), ricami delicatamente West Coast, dolcezze inglesi da pudding lisergico (la title track), e stordite asperità garage (mai troppo accentuate). Se la il sonnambulismo psichedelico prende il sopravvento su “Helen Says”, il pop torna a scuotere il tiepido torpore con “My Girl Goes Shine”, e il disco arriva in un baleno alla sua metà. E’ un album che “scappa via” questo “Aeroplanes”, e che si fa rincorrere negli ascolti, per fissare nella retina una visione nitida degli affreschi in technicolor della band. E così, tra i riverberi di “Clouds Of Blonde Girls”, ci si perde nella ballata “You Don’t Know” e si finisce nel viaggio finale di “Everyone Has A Spot In The Sunshine” con i suoi intrecci vocali e strumentali e la sua strepitosa jam. Gli Strange Flowers, come già detto in sede di recensione di “Ortoflorvivaistica” trascendono i confini nazionali, e, punto ancora più prezioso, collaudano una miscela micidiale che potrebbe mettere d’accordo fans di Ride e Chapterhouse con adepti delle religioni ancestrali di Pink Floyd e Pretty Things. Na, was ein Glück … So lahmarschig und verhuscht, wie auf ihren letzten beiden Platten gehen die STRANGE FLOWERS nicht mehr zu Werke. Hier gibt es eher bodenständige Kost, ziemlich Westcoast-mäßig, die BYRDS sind jedenfalls auf dieser Platte der größere Einfluss als Syd Barrett, der der Band nicht wirklich gut getan hatte. So straight forwärts rockender Countrypsych mit gelegentlichen Wahwah-Exkursen, ganz im Sinne der L.A.-Paisley-Punk-Szene, mit diesem Sound haben die Flowers nun endlich mal eine Richtung eingeschlagen, für die ich mich auch erwärmen könnte.
